Taxation

The Village of New Minas issues one tax bill per year, in the month of May (due August 1st). Properties within the Village of New Minas also receive two tax invoices from the County of Kings (May and September). Village rates cover the following services within the Village of New Minas, including associated administration and staffing: sidewalks, street lighting, parks, playgrounds, facilities (including the Louis Millett Community Complex) and recreation programs.

Tax Rates

Residential Rate: 43 cents per $100 of assessed value
Resource Rate: 43 cents per $100 of assessed value
Commercial Rate: 59.2 cents per $100 of assessed value
Sewer Rate (properties not on our water system): $532.69/yr

PAYMENT MADE BY BANK OR MORTGAGE COMPANY:
Contact Village Office and give them name of bank/mortgage company & mortgage #
Contact your bank, give them your new Village Account # and amount owing.

DUE DATE:
The due date for taxes is August 1st. Ratepayers have the option of paying their current taxes in three equal installments without penalty by the following dates:

• June 30
• July 31
• August 29 

PAYMENT OPTIONS:
The Village of New Minas currently accepts the following payments:

• Cash
• Debit
• Cheque
• Post-Dated Cheques
• Pre-Authorized payments
• On-line payments  RBC/TD only
• Interact E-Transfer can be sent to epayments@newminas.com, please include your roll number and civic address in the message portion or your taxes may not be applied to the correct account.

Payee Options: New Minas, Village of / New Minas (Village of)
Account number is the property ID #, which is NM followed by the first 8 digits of your assessment number.  

PRE-AUTHORIZED SET-UP:
The Village of New Minas is pleased to offer a convenient way to pay your taxes: Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD).

It’s a quick and convenient way to manage your taxes, by paying once a year. The payments will come out of your account on August 1st.

To start using PAD complete the supplied Payor’s Pre-Authorized Debit Agreement form and return to the Village Office for processing, if you have any questions on how to fill out the form, please contact the office at 902-679-1878.

TAX CERTIFICATES:
Legal professionals and Real Estate Companies will have to contact both the County and the Village office to receive tax certificates. A fee of $40.00 is required for certificates.

INTEREST ON OUTSTANDING BALANCES:
The Village will impose interest, for non-payment of taxes. The charge will be 1% per month, compounded, and will begin on September 1st on all arrears.

MOVING/SELLING YOUR PROPERTY:
Contact the Village Office to ensure your account is updated.
Mobile home owner can also fill out the Mobile Home transfer form to help with ownership transfer process.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR TAXPAYERS TO NOTE:
In accordance with the Municipal Government Act, Village taxes are a lien on the owner’s property. Taxes are due and payable as outlined on the tax bill, and Village taxes that are in arrears for more than three years shall be listed for tax sale by the Village.
